GENERATIVE AI IN LEGAL PRACTICE

Generative AI (GAI) is poised to significantly impact legal practice, and a thorough understanding of GAI's potential uses and limitations will help junior lawyers stand out in a competitive legal market. This one-credit course will look beyond headlines and surface-level discussions to provide a comprehensive introduction to the growing role of GAI in the legal profession, focusing on both practical application and ethical considerations. Students will study what GAI is and how it works, read about and discuss both the potential applications and limitations of GAI in different areas of legal practice, and develop a comprehensive understanding of the ethical implications of GAI use, including privacy, bias, and the role of human oversight in legal decision-making. Equipped with that foundational understanding, students will explore different GAI tools and learn to use them to research legal issues, draft legal documents, and enhance the revision process. Through hands-on exercises, students will develop critical skills for integrating GAI into modern legal practice while navigating its challenges responsibly.
