MONEY AND POLITICS: THE LAW OF POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS
(LAWM-4014) - 3 UNITS

This course will explore the political process with a particular focus on candidate and ballot measure campaigns. In this course students will discuss issues related to political theories behind our system of representation, the role of the judiciary when ruling on laws related to political campaigns, and statutory interpretation.

First, this course will focus on candidate campaigns by examining the basic framework of campaign finance law, the purposes behind reform, and the arguments for and against existing reforms and reform proposals. Second, this course will focus on ballot measure campaigns by examining legal issues related to those campaigns. The course will discuss both ballot measures proposed by the legislature and those proposed via the mechanisms of direct democracy, particularly the initiative process.
