This class will examine the role of apology and forgiveness in the context of mediation.

Whether you are acting as the mediator or an advocate in a mediation, how and when do you advise clients to apologize? Topics covered will include: causes of anger and hate, causes of resistance to settlement, saying I'm sorry vs. seeking an apology, the different types of apologies, the stages of apology, what is forgiveness?, the motivations for apology, risks associated with apologizing, how to advise clients to apologize, the non-apology, self-apology, and stages of reconciliation.

Class material will include religious, nonreligious, and cross-cultural perspectives on these themes.
