EMPIRICAL LEGAL STUDIES
(LAWJ-4080) - 4 UNITS

In this course students will be learning both empirical methods, caselaw that has applied those methods, and reading and critiquing legal scholarship that uses such methods. The course will examine legal concepts and issues (from a variety of fields ranging from patent to civil rights law) that fall within the category empirical legal studies. The substantive topics studied in the course will include empirical research and methods, including but not limited to statistical methods, as well as how empirical (such as statistical) observation, research and studies have been applied by courts in specific legal cases and by academics in legal scholarship advocating choices of law and policy.
