COMMUNITY ALTERNATIVES TO POLICING AND THE LAW
(LAWI-4250) - 3 UNITS
This course explores the legal, historical, and social dimensions of community-based alternatives to traditional policing. Students will engage with legal doctrine, policy debates, and real-world case studies to analyze the limits and possibilities of legal reform in developing non-carceral systems of justice.
Moreover, students will partner with community safety organizations to study the outcomes of non-carceral alternatives in comparison to traditional policing in Los Angeles County, including restorative and transformative justice, mental health and crisis response teams, violence prevention programs, and public health approaches to community safety.
