MENTAL DISABILITIES LAW
(LAWI-4020) - 2 UNITS

This course focuses on an analysis of the legal theories and procedures which affect persons identified as mentally disabled. The course covers civil aspects of mental disabilities law, such as involuntary commitment; guardianship; competency to refuse treatment; right to treatment; and civil rights of the mentally disabled in institutions and in the community. Criminal law issues include competency to stand trial; diminished capacity; criminal responsibility; and coerced behavioral change.
