This seminar will provide an overview of the history and practice of Islamic law in the world today. After a brief discussion of the sources and historical development of Islamic Law and the Islamic legal system, as well as the development of the various schools of thought in Islamic law, we will survey contemporary Islamic property, commercial, criminal, and family law in both traditional Islamic countries such as the United Arab Emirates and more secular countries such as Turkey and Malaysia. The seminar will conclude with a discussion of the discriminatory treatment - real or perceived - of non-Muslim minorities in Islamic countries and of Muslim minorities in the United States and other Western countries.
