INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY IN THE DIGITAL AGE
(LAWF-4067) - 2 UNITS

Internet and technology are changing the way we think about intellectual property and IP protection. Different types of goods are now distributed and sold digitally through the Internet (e.g. software, videos, songs, books, etc.) and the amount of those goods keep on increasing. The protection of the IP behind those goods faces challenges, due to their digital nature and the broadness of Internet as a distribution network.

In addition, digital goods can be easily duplicated, saved, redistributed, modified, and Internet makes it way too easy to propagate infringing copies or protected information to an endless number of users. In addition to this, liability for infringement of IP creates a dilemma, where Internet intermediaries (e.g. Google, Facebook, Instagram) face potential risks that might deeply affect their business, growth and impact on society.

This course will expose students to cases involving IP protection of goods in this new technological age. We will cover cases related to trade secret, patent, copyright and trademark.

No technical background is required for the course. No previous IP knowledge is required.
